Winter Birds is the last of the Christmas quilts I made in 2020. I purposely chose a wintry fabric of pine branches, rather than a Christmassy one, so that it could be used on into the new year. The green and brown striped fabric on the back was a real find at an estate sale (tucked away in an old trunk in a dilapidated shed). A tell-tale sign that the fabric was vintage was that it was only 36″ wide, rather than the modern-day standard width of 42″. Machine embroidered “redwork” style birds grace the centers of Economy quilt blocks which were popular in the 1930’s. Today, this block is sometimes called Square in a Square.
