Brick Quilt

This quilt was given to me by a friend of the family of its maker, Lula Dixon, of Sumner County, Tennessee. With the help of quilt authorities Merikay Waldvogel and Betts Ramsey, I was able to “piece together” (pun intended) that the quilt was made in the 1940’s. Lula used a combination of 1930’s and 40’s feed sacks and dress fabrics to construct the brick pattern of the quilt. She ran out of border fabric but “made do” by adding different fabric to the short borders on only two sides of the quilt. The muslin back is cut larger than the top and turned over to the top to create the binding. Lula most likely used an old heavy blanket in place of the batting, making it too thick to easily quilt it. So the quilt is hand-tied, rather than quilted, to hold the layers together. Size: 64″ x 82″.
