Campers’ Star Quilt by Katie Longsmith, 2020 / Size: 70″ x 80″ / 100% cotton fabric from thrift-store shirts and sheets / star medallion block / starshine quilting design
One of my thrift-store shopping excursions produced several shirts in plaids and checks. As I was contemplating what to do with them, I came across a picture of a Star of Bethlehem quilt made in 1945 by Elsie or Jenny Mauck, of Harrisonville, Missouri. What caught my fancy was the caption for the quilt photo: “the unusual use of plaids for the diamonds mixed with ginghams makes it an unexpected visual treat!” The worn plaids in my version make me think of camping under the stars.
