Joshua Quilt

Joshua Quilt by Katie Longsmith, 2020 / Size: 84″ x 108″ / 100% cotton fabric from thrift-store shirts and sheets / Log Cabin block, Sunshine and Shadow  / feather and spiral quilting design
I happened across a thrift-store shirt in a warm red color – perfect for the center square that symbolizes the hearth and home in a Log Cabin block. I also chanced upon a picture of a Log Cabin quilt, arranged in a pattern called Sunshine and Shadow, made by Martha Tribble Hieatt of Henry County, Kentucky, in 1875. As I was piecing my version, I realized that my “hearth and home” squares surrounded the Crosses created in the pattern, and this scripture came to mind: As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
