Sisters Quilts

Sisters Quilts by Katie Longsmith, 2020 / size of each: 58″ x 73″ / 100% cotton fabric from thrifted shirts and sheets / Seven Sisters quilt block / paisley and star quilting design
A quilt titled Seven Sisters, made by Lucinda Jane Raines Bevill in Puryear, Tennessee in the late 1800’s, inspired The Sisters Quilts. The Seven Sisters quilt block is usually associated with the Confederate flag of the Civil War. In my versions, the colors and homespun checks and stripes of several thrift-store shirts reflect the divisions of North and South, brother vs. brother, and sister vs. sister of the Civil War.
